Joanah Douglas Burks earned her heavenly wings on Monday, February 6, 2023. Joanah Burks was born on May 30, 1939, to the union of Sylvester and Leola Henderson Douglas. She was their fourth child, and a loving and caring person.
At a young age, Sister Burks united with Logan Chapel Church. There, she was a Sunday school teacher. Later, she united with Judea Baptist Church where she was a choir member and secretary of the choir. Sister Burks worked faithfully until she moved her membership to Starlight Church of God in Christ. She was the mother of the Church, Assistant Scribe, and involved in the Women’s Auxiliary. As an assistant Sunday school teacher, Sister Burks was very dutiful in serving the Lord until one day God saw the road was getting rough and the hills were hard to climb.
She gently closed her gentle eyes because God had spoken; It was her time. The weary hours, the days of pain, and the sleepless nights are no longer. The ever patient worn out frame has found a sweet place at last. Sister Burks received her education from Marion County School. Thereafter, she met and married her first husband, Howard Jackson II. She would later become a mother to seven children. To support her family, she worked numerous jobs ranging from, but not limited to, food and domestic services. Sometimes working multiple jobs in a single day. When not working or serving the Lord, she could be found cooking delicious meals and enjoying quality time with family and friends. Love came to Joanah a second time around when she met and married Robert Burks. Joanah is proceeded in death by her loving parents, Sylvester Douglas, Sr., and Leola Henderson Douglas; Her husbands, Howard Jackson II and Robert Burks; Brother, Sylvester Douglas, Jr.; Sisters, Willa Williams and Zelma Burks; Beloved children, Jerimaye Miller, Pamela McDonald, and Howard Jackson, III; and, Granddaughter, Meeshelium “MiMi” Jackson.
