Mrs. Julia Mae Rodgers Booker
Beloved Mother. Grandmother, Sister, and Friend
Julia Mae Rodgers Booker was born on May 9, 1935, in Atlanta, Louisiana, to Sylvester Rodgers, Sr. and Bessie Pennywell Rodgers. From the very beginning, her life was shaped by faith, family, and a quiet strength that would carry her through ninety beautiful years. On December 15, 2025, she peacefully transitioned to eternal rest, leaving behind a legacy of love that will continue to guide generations.
Julia was the matriarch of her family—a steady presence, a source of wisdom, and a woman whose love anchored everyone around her. She had a gentle way about her, but her influence was strong and lasting. Whether she was checking in with a simple, sincere “How are you?” or offering guidance through quiet example, she made people feel cared for and known. To those who loved her most, she was affectionately called “Mommas” and “Pumpkin,” names that fit her nurturing heart perfectly.
Her faith was central to her life. Julia kept her Bible close and lived what she believed. Church was never just somewhere she went—it was part of who she was. She was a longtime, faithful member of Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, where she joyfully sang in the choir. She later joined St. Agnes Missionary Baptist Church, continuing her service through worship and song. In later years, she became a member of Second Baptist Church, Pearland, and eventually found her church home at Genesis Church, under the leadership of Reverend Curry. Wherever she worshiped, Julia served faithfully and lifted her voice in praise.
An entrepreneur at heart, Julia spent more than sixty years as a beautician and traveling wig stylist. She went where she was needed, building trust and lasting relationships through her skill, professionalism, and care. Her work was never just about hair—it was about dignity, confidence, and helping people feel good about themselves. She shared her knowledge freely and served generations with her hands and her heart.
Julia loved the simple joys of life, especially time spent outdoors. Her garden was one of her happy places. She took pride in growing watermelons, peas, and greens, and she enjoyed showing others how to shell peas fresh from the garden. Being outside, tending to what she had planted, brought her peace and a sense of fulfillment that she carried with her into every part of her life.
She also showed love through her cooking. Her chocolate banana pudding was a favorite, along with her sock-it-to-me cake and pound cake. During the holidays, her dressing was a staple, and her homemade cornbread was always out of sight and quickly gone—made from scratch and loved by all. Her kitchen was a place of comfort, tradition, and togetherness, where food, laughter, and love were shared freely.
Julia was preceded in death by her husband: Willie Booker, Jr.; her sons: Chester Owens Jr. and Johnny Owens; her parents: Sylvester and Bessie Rodgers; and her siblings: Edgar Lee Thanars, Kerry Rodgers, Idella Rodgers, Margaret Gladney, Esau Rodgers, and Gaynell Drummer.
