Mrs. Bettye Jean Sephers Grayson
Beloved Mother, Grandmother, Sister, and Friend
Bettye J. Grayson was born in Bellaire, Texas, in the Riceville community, to Richard, Sr. and Eva Mae Sephers. She was the first-born daughter to this union.
She accepted Christ at a very early age and was baptized at Riceville Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor T. E. Spiller. When the family relocated to the Piney Point community in Houston, Texas, she united with Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church, first under the pastorship of Rev. E. A. Jones, and later, Rev. Clarence G. Wilkins. While residing in California, she became a member of St. Paul’s Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles. For the past ten years, up until the time of her passing, she attended Zion Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Fulshear, Texas, under the leadership of Rev. Donnie R. Johnson.
She united in Holy matrimony with Melvin E. Johnson, who preceded her in death. From this union, two children were born, Roddrick and Renee. In 1982, in Los Angeles, California, she united in Holy matrimony with Norman H. Grayson, who also preceded her in death in 2002.
Bettye attended Piney Point Elementary and Jack Yates High School in Houston. In 1964 she obtained a certificate in cosmetology from Vermont Beauty College in Los Angeles. Shortly after obtaining her cosmetology license, she became an entrepreneur in the hair business, opening Bettye’s House of Beauty on Santa Barbara Avenue in Los Angeles in
1967. She owned and successfully operated this business until
she and Norman relocated to Fulshear in 1984 where they built their forever home. She retired from a second career at the Frito Lay Company in Rosenberg in early 2001 to care for her ailing husband.
She was a devoted wife and a loving and caring daughter, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great- great-grandmother. She was a pillar of strength and wisdom for her family. Bettye was an excellent seamstress and was quite the fashionista. She loved to collect memorabilia and was also known for having a “green thumb.” Her favorite pastimes were spending time with her grandchildren,
entertaining family and friends and going fishing with her sisters.
She departed this life at the age of 87 on Wednesday, October 11, 2023. Her parents, brothers (Richard Jr. and Arthur), and two sisters (Ora and Joyce) preceded her in death.
