David Wayne McCray was born on December 6, 1960, in Houston, TX, to Harold Eugene McCray and Doris Lee Hill. He accepted Christ at an early age while singing in the church choir.

He attended Stephen F. Austin State University where he played football. He would later go on to work in construction and drive trucks.
