Deacon Jimmy James Jones, Sr.

Deacon Jimmy James Jones, Sr.

A Beloved Husband, Father, Brother, & Servant

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
Psalm 23: 1-6

On May 6, 1934, a baby boy was born to Mr. Cody and Mrs. Hattie Mae Justice Jones in Clarksville, Red River County, Texas. Jimmy accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized. He was raised in Clarksville and would later relocate to Houston. Jimmy would then meet and marry the love of his life, Josephine Gordon. To this union, four children were born.

He would later join Greater Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor Louis Bradford and was ordained as a deacon. After his ordination, he became affectionately called “Deac” by his family and friends.

With Jimmy being reared in a home where God was the head of the household, he knew that hard work would be needed in order to care for his family. With that, he held many jobs to provide for them, such as a bus driver, employment at Sears & Roebuck; he even owned a lawncare service, and he would ultimately retire from Alief ISD after serving as Mahanay Elementary School’s most beloved custodian.
He was active in the church holding several positions such as Church Treasurer, Chairman of Deacon Board, and he maintained the landscape of the church until his health failed.

“Deac” is preceded in death by his Parents, his Wife of 65 Years: Josephine Gordon Jones, Eight Siblings, One Son: Roy Gordon, Sr. and a set of twins who passed during their infancy.

Leaving to cherish his life and memory: His Children: Jessica Joyce Jones, Selena Hicks (Ellis); Jimmy J. Jones, Jr. and Gary Donnell Jones; Daughter-In-Law: Katherine Gordon; 20 Grandchildren, 32 Great-Grandchildren, and 16 Great-Great Grandchildren; His Brother: M. J. Jones, Two Sister-In-Laws: Mamie Elder & Viola Gordon; One Cousin: Christine Johnson; Special Niece: Johnnie Miles; God-Daughter: Kathleen Carter along with a host of additional nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
